While plants are a great addition to any living space, after a while they can start to look a little dull if you don’t place them in a unique way. One of the best ways to mix plants up is to hang plants from the ceiling by drilling a hook in the drywall. Unfortunately, this may prompt the landlord to deduct money from your security deposit. It’s also not ideal if you don’t have a drill or aren’t very good with power tools. Don’t worry if a drill isn’t right for you, there are plenty of ways to hang plants without making holes in the walls or ceiling.
Method 1 of 2: Hang the plants from the ceiling
Step 1: Use sticky hooks to hang them from the ceiling without drilling
There are sticky team hooks with adjustable hooks that are perfect for hanging from the ceiling. Buy these hooks at an office supply store or big-box store. Remove the adhesive backing and stick it directly to the ceiling. Then put the hook or twine on the pot on the loop of the adjustable hook to hang it up.
You can also do this with standard commanding hooks if you want to hang it from parts of the trim or wall that don’t have drywall underneath
Tip: This is the best option if you want to hang the plant directly from the ceiling. However, be sure to check the weight limit for your team hooks before you buy them. Typically, team hooks hold 5-10 pounds (2.3-4.5 kg), so for heavier plants, you’ll need to buy stronger hooks.
Step 2: Choose a pot with a suction cup hanger to hang lightweight plants without holes
There are several suction cup pots you can use to hang a plant from a skylight or high window. Unfortunately, you can only use a suction cup hanger to safely hang a plant on the glass, but it’s a great option when there are no holes left in the wall. Keep in mind that suction cups are not the best solution for plants weighing more than 5 pounds (2.3 kg), as they can rip the suction cup off the glass over time.
If you have a large skylight, hanging 3-4 plants from the glass is a great way to create a modern look in your home
Step 3: Use a magnetic hook and wall magnet to hang a plant in the air
Get a heavy-duty magnetic hook, which is a magnetic plate with a hook attached to it. Attach the hook to a duct, metal fixture, or vent on the ceiling. Wrap the hanging plant on the hook to hang it from the ceiling.
If you have a really strong magnetic hook, you can attach them to drywall because the studs have nails in them.
There are magnetic pots on the market, but most of them have magnets on the side to hang them on the fridge or wall. However, this is a great option if you want to hang plants on the wall!
Method 2 of 2: Hang plants on walls, windows and doors
Step 1: Hang plants on a tension rod in a window frame for a sophisticated look
Tension rods rely on pressure to hold them in place, and they are commonly used to hold shower curtains or clothes in a closet. Take the tension rod and pull the rod out, holding it inside the window frame. Pull out the 2 ends of the rod until the pads on both ends rest against the frame. Place it 3-6 inches (7.6-15.2 cm) from the top of the window and hang the plants from it.
This is a great way to hang plants because the tension rod can support a fair amount of weight and won’t stand out too much in your room – many people might think it’s just part of your blinds.
If you have plants that hang from a rope and don’t have hooks, pull the rope over the rod before pulling it inside the window frame.
Step 2: Attach C-clamps to light fixtures or walls that protrude for a modern option
If you have an open floor plan, arches, or open doorways, wrap the jaws of the C-clamp around a thin piece of drywall 3-6 inches (7.6-15.2 cm) from the ceiling. Tighten the clamp by turning the handle clockwise until the tabs on each jaw are securely attached to the wall. Then hang the plant on the clamp or on the protruding end of the rod.
This is a really cool option if your home has an industrial feel.
You can also do this with exposed rafters or sturdy fasteners built into the wall.
Don’t tighten the clamp all the way down. Stop as soon as you feel light pressure from the tightening knob. If you keep turning the knob and tightening the clamp, you could punch a hole in the wall.
Step 3: Attach the trellis to the hooks and hang the plants on the bars
A trellis is basically a metal or wooden grid used to display the plants. Buy 2 high-strength team hooks. You can buy a trellis at your local garden store. Hang the top bars of the trellis on the command hooks and get some pots with built-in hooks to hang the trellis. Slide the hooks onto the lattice bars to attach them to the structure.
This is a really cool modern option, but it requires a little more work than other solutions. However, the end result is awesome!
If you want, you can just lean the lattice against the wall. This is the best way to do it if you don’t want to hang command interceptors on the wall.
Step 4: Use overhead hooks to hang plants from unused doors
If you have a door in your home that you don’t use often, hang hooks over the door and hang plants from them. These hooks are usually used for towels, but in most cases they are strong enough to hold medium sized plants. If you do, be sure to get hooks over the door where the actual hook part protrudes at least 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) to give your pots room to hang.
Step 5: Purchase lightweight pots with suction cups to hang your plants from windows
There are several types of lightweight pots with built-in suction cups. Transfer any plant that likes well-drained soil and lots of light to the suction cups. Then attach the suction cups to the window where you want to place your plants to hang them higher up in your home.
This is a really unique option because people don’t usually put plants directly in front of a window. This is a great choice if you want to do things a little differently or if you have really big windows.
There are magnetic versions of these pots that allow you to hang your plants on ducts, fixtures or a refrigerator if you prefer.
Tips
You can hang several plants on hooks on a hanger if you are hanging plants on symmetrical sides. Be sure to hang heavier plants higher and lighter plants lower.
If you have larger deciduous plants in your home, you can hang plants weighing less than 1-2 pounds (0.45-0.91 kg) on one of the branches. This is a great option if you have a lot of plants and really want to fully immerse yourself in the tropical view.
